Paul, as an instructor, is just every bit of awesome-sauce you could want. One of the most important facets of being able to learn improv - is the ability to feel "safe" in the room to "fail". This guy has the most effervescent, infectious, brilliant personality... he tears down all your egoic defenses with laughter, and then pushes you in all the right ways to break thru old limits. The word that keeps coming to mind to describe him is genuine. He's so down-to-earth.
Going to class each week was so much fun. I found it very easy to understand his instructions, and very easy to accept his feedback, and adjust. He peppered the class with so much wit, humor and goodwill. He garnered the respect of everyone so quickly by the way he honored, without judgment, the choices each actor made in the room. It felt like sacred art.
If you have any interest in learning Improv - you can certainly go to many different schools -- some that just specialize in teaching it. But, if you do, you will miss out on Mr. Hungerford - and that'll be a shame. -Trevor E.

The most important thing about the audition is to be real and connect with the clients with strong intentions and choices. This is of course easy to say and a constant challenge. "The A-to-Z commercial class is an absolute must for commercial actors. They also have a weekly Wednesday workout that is currently only $35, with no ongoing requirement, an amazing deal. In A-to-Z with Paul Hungerford and Judy Kain there were so many skills I learned that I feel stupid about how I was going out and auditioning before. The very next audition I did after the class was so much more fun and looser, because of the work this class teaches. Commercials give you so little info on just a few lines of copy, and this A-to-Z class tells you how--and that you must--fill in all those questions and blanks in order to act real and have fun, from where you are, who you're talking to, how you feel about it, to technical things like who's in the camera or on the board, and techniques on how best to use the fourth wall---all in order to gain ease and comfort in your process and show the best YOU. KEEP. IT. REAL! I have a tendency to be a bit large, coming from theater, and I always thought it was more appropriate to work that way - with that size - in commercials, but it's really not. Slice of life, just like with TV! But I learned a TON of critical technical things too, like launch & button, how to play the 4th wall, how to work in looking at the board & JUSTIFY the gaze organically, etc etc. And then wonderful big picture things like RELATIONSHIP and the arc of the scene / character trajectory. SPECIFIC choices. Also BOLD choices as long as they are GROUNDED in reality and the environment/situation. The camera's the big eye & it don't lie - have the thoughts that keep it real & create the progression of the story. Paul is terrific, as are Judy & Francene. - Tommy D.
